Obituary for Mary Jane Mongeon (Schmaltienst)

Mary Jane “Mary” (Schmaldienst) Mongeon, 70 of Winooski passed away peacefully in the arms of her loving daughter Suzanne, on November 21, 2017. Mary was born in Burlington, Vermont on August 5, 1947 to Robert and Ursula (Ritchie) Schmaldienst.

Mary attended schools in both Burlington and Winooski. She was active within her community volunteering as a catechism teacher and coaching the middle school softball team for many years.
Mary worked for New England Telephone and Vermont Transit. She found her true love of hospitality working at the Radisson Hotel for many years. Her many customers appreciated her witty conversations and many jokes. Most recently she enjoyed volunteering at the Vermont Veterans Militia Museum at Camp Johnson in Colchester. Her love of history made this a perfect match.

Mary loved spending time with her family and friends. Her hobbies included cruising back roads, traveling and reading a good book.

She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Ursula (Ritchie) Schmaldienst, her infant bother Paul and her sister-in-law Sue Schmaldienst. She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Mongeon of 52 years, daughters and sons-in-law Judith and Craig Desautels, Suzanne Robinson and Will Pate, Nancy and Matthew Villemaire and son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Meghan (O’Brien) Mongeon. She also left ten wonderful grandchildren who lit up her life: Dakota, Tyler and Jackson Desautels, Katelyn and Christopher Robinson, Sierra Villemaire, Logan, Riley, Cian and Violet Mongeon.

Mary also left behind two brothers, Peter and Michael Schmaldienst, and a sister-in-law Sheila (Stacey) Schmaldienst, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and several dear friends, as well as the love of her father’s life, Iris Houle and lastly her feisty cat Shadow, better known as Love Bug Baby Boy.
A sincere thank you goes out to Meghan (O’Brien) Mongeon for being such an amazing and loving daughter-in-law, friend and confident to our mother. Thank you also to our extended family Tammy Bonk, Mary Ann (Lesage) Burlingame and Tommy Lesage for all of your love and support.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the McClure Miller VNA House in Colchester for their support and compassion during our mother’s brief stay.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Parish in Winooski, followed by a burial at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Winooski.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Donate Life Vermont, 10 Gar Place, Underhill, VT 05489 in memory of Mary, as she received the gift of life in 2011.
