James Henry Atherton was born on March 11, 1944 in Burlington, Vermont and grew up in Burlington. Father Roy Atherton and mother Mildred Atherton predeceased him long ago. He was also predeceased by his beloved brother Tommy Atherton and his dear sister Janet Hebert.
He was a member of the Vermont National Guard in his younger years and retired from New England Telephone after 30 years.
He is survived by Michelle Atherton who he was married to for 17 years and his dear children and grandchildren, daughter Angie Leahey and grandchildren Ava, Alden, and Mason Leahey; daughter Danielle Atherton and granddaughter Brooklyn Booska; and son Eric Atherton.
Butch, Jimbo, Jimmy, dad and grandpa. He had so many names to so many people that loved him. He was the guy that knew everyone, and the guy everyone wanted to know. He could remodel a house, fix a car, was a great cook, enjoyed fishing and camping, loved to entertain, he loved his Yankees, had a thing for Jeeps and most of all loved being out on his boat and by the water. He was devoted to his job, no matter what he would always show up at work. He instilled a very strong work ethic in his children and we are forever grateful. He loved with all his heart and was extremely generous in nature. I will forever hear his hearty laugh and see the twinkle in his blue eyes. He will never be forgotten. His spirit is within everyone that he loved. His spirit is strong, just like our daddy was.
