In the mid-1970s Jim was the Race Committee Chairman of the Hudson Valley Ski Club (HVSC), setting up fun ski races for club members. Jim enjoyed TGIF socialization and called his week-ending get-togethers “Race Training,” which is what HVSC continues to call its Friday night socializations.
Jim and I were in the same Army Reserve unit, which met every Tuesday evening for a while. In the winter there wasn’t much to do, other than sit around. Somehow, Jim convinced the Commanding Officer that we could accomplish Physical Training by skiing at the nearby city park’s rope tow, which bordered our Reserve Training Center. Jim and I skied a few Tuesday evenings until the CO had second thoughts whether skiing proficiency was part of his unit’s mission.
As was the 70’s style, Jim wore his hair long, which did not meet the Army Reserves grooming standards. So, Jim attended Reserve meetings with his long hair stuffed under a short hair wig – which he had figured out was allowed. His HVSC nickname “Mangy Moose” reflected both his favorite Jackson Hole watering spot and his hairstyle.
While in-person HVSC Race Training gatherings are on hold, I’ve been toasting Jim’s memory at my private TGIF celebrations.
